Founder Thomas Zimmer, Jr. began his jewelry career at 14, apprenticing with Hallowell & Co. Jewelers in Poughkeepsie. He moved to New York City at 18 to work for George O. Street & Co., making wedding and men’s rings for Tiffany & Co. In 1893, Thomas returned to Poughkeepsie to open his own store, later joined by his brother Fred, a watchmaker.

Zimmer Brothers initially specialized in diamonds and watches, serving as the official watch inspector for three railroads and manufacturing wedding bands on-site. Thomas’s son Leonard Sr. joined in 1914, guiding the business through tough times like the Depression and WWII. Leonard Sr. was a skilled watchmaker, jeweler, and engraver.

In 1948, Leonard Jr. expanded the business, adding many of the products and services we offer today, and was known for his beautiful store designs and window displays.

Today, the business is run by Leonard Jr.’s son-in-law Michael Gordon, who joined in 1971, and his daughter Jocelyn Gordon Klastow, who joined full-time in 2001. Michael and Jocelyn represent the fourth and fifth generations of the family.
