When I was young, I was a bit of a troublemaker, so my mother sent me to work at my father’s jewelry store during the summer to keep me busy. I started working as a jewelry repairer at age 12. It wasn't child labor—I actually enjoyed the easy work. I continued working part-time and full-time through college, picking up skills along the way. I started designing and creating jewelry and even studied watchmaking for two years at Bradley University, where I learned to make any part of a watch. Later, I taught metalworking for 10 years in high school and two universities, all while running a jewelry business on the side.

When I opened my jewelry store in Buffalo, NY, other jewelers told me that my style of jewelry wouldn’t sell here. My designs were creative, similar to what you might find on Etsy today. But 50 years later, I’m still here, and now they’re trying to copy me.

Our shop is fully equipped for nearly every jewelry-making process. We use everything from century-old tools to modern technology like CAD design, CNC milling, and 3D printing. We do all our own casting in-house and have over 6,000 molds from designs we've created over the years. With our laser welder, we can handle very delicate jobs. I’m also a diamond cutter, so when someone brings in a chipped diamond, I can fix it.

In our back room, we have a machine shop with tools like a Bridgeport mill, bandsaws, lathes, Gorton Pantographs, and die-striking presses. Because of our equipment, we often help other jewelers in the area with jobs they can’t do themselves.

We’ve scaled back to a more comfortable size—once, I had 22 employees, but now it’s just family: Dave, Erik, and Gretchen. I’m semi-retired now, only working five days a week. Most of the jewelry we sell is made by us, and we do a lot of custom designs. Whether it’s a $20 piece or a $20,000 design, we put our best craftsmanship into everything.
